CogAT Information
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools uses the Cognitive Abilities Test, more commonly referred to as the CogAT7, as an aptitude test. All CMS second graders are screened with this tool in mid-September.
The test is not timed, picture-based, and read aloud to students. No reading is required.
The CogAT7 measures a students' ability to reason to reason in three separate cognitive domains-- Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal. Each domain is broken into three different subtests.
Verbal= Picture Analogies, Sentence Completion, Picture Classification
Quantitative= Number Analogies, Number Puzzles, Number Series
Nonverbal= Figure Matrices, Paper Folding, Figure Classification

Earning an 87% or higher on the CogAT7 will earn a student points on the Talent Development rubric.
Scoring a 96% or higher on the CogAT7 will automatically place a student in the Talent Development program.

ITBS Information
The Iowa Test of Basic Skills, or ITBS, is an achievement test given to second graders who score in the 87th percentile or higher on the verbal subtest, quantitative/nonverbal composite, or age-composite on the CogAT with parent permission.
CMS second graders who qualify will take one or two parts of the ITBS-- Reading Comprehension and/or Mathematics.
The Reading Comprehension section contains a variety of different tasks Students answer questions about a picture that tells a story. They also demonstrate their comprehension of sentences and stories.
The Math section is comprise of three different subtests-- Math Concepts & Estimation, Math Problem Solving & Data Interpretation, and Math Computation.
